Habitat for Humanity
Eagle Butte, South Dakota July 6-17 2004
This Habitat for Humanity Global Village build was our first as team leaders. We had a wonderful group of 18 volunteers working together with the local affiliate. We spent the time rehabbing an existing home which including pouring a concrete drive and building picnic tables for the Habitat affiliate dorm. A setback for our team was when we arrived to find that the whole Habitat storage warehouse had burned down with all the supplies in it. That event did not deter the team’s spirit as we got to work salvaging anything of value and repairing some existing homes. It was a rich cultural experience as we got to stay on the reservation and visit the Black Hills, The Badlands, The Crazy Horse Monument as well as attend a local Pow Wow and take part in a sweat lodge ceremony. Jerry Farlee the head of the affiliate took our group out to his large buffalo ranch and taste some delicious buffalo steaks. It was a beautiful time, rich and rewarding. We learned a lot and made many new friends and as always time ended all to soon.
