Habitat for Humanity
Sandtown in Baltimore, Maryland, June 25-29, 2007
This was the first build we ever did so close to home. It was the 16th annual summer building project for the community of Sandtown in Baltimore, MD. More than 800 volunteers came from all over the USA to help in the building. Habitat has completed more than 225 homes with an additional 25 under construction and a goal of completing every vacant house within a 15 block focus area. All of the homes are for home owners in the community. We made tremendous progress and by the end of the week two home were completed and ready for dedication to two deserving families.
Despite the hottest week of the summer topping 99 degrees each day we all worked well together. The volunteers ranged from novices to very experienced construction workers. Black and Decker sponsored the weeks build and I got to see and work with the many of the wonderful power tools they have.
We began each day with a gathering of music and song to celebrate and worship. The women of the community sponsored a hearty lunch for us and there was plenty of water and snacks to keep us going during the day. Despite the hard work and heat the week passed quickly and once again we left with feeling good about helping others in such a worthwhile cause and meeting some wonderful people. We look forward to our next build in 2008!
